The Burning Legion have existed in the World of Warcraft story ever since the beginning, and their members are probably not going anywhere anytime soon. While they seemingly were defeated in Legion, some of their forces still remain to cause harm to the people of Azeroth. Yet, some players do not know just how this massive army first began. It was not always the world destroying forces united under one banner, but they were once an uncoordinated and incompetent bunch waiting to be united by a powerful leader.

The Discovery of the Demons
Before the Burning Legion began their conquest, they were simply unorganized demons from the Twisting Nether that worked against the titans of the Pantheon. The titans wished to create order in the Great Dark Beyond, but to do that they had to fight these vile demons who were turning entire civilizations to ash. One of the members of the Pantheon, Sargeras, continued to grow more hopeless as the fighting pressed on, especially once he discovered that every demon he killed would simply be reborn again.
Sargeras would team up with the titan Aggramar to deal with this unstoppable force, and he would discover the secrets of the Twisting Nether so that he could build a prison world for every demon. With this new world, Sargeras and Aggramar were able to bring peace to the Great Dark Beyond. They would split up their focus and continue their quest to beat back all the remaining demons, but that would all change when Sargeras encountered a planet infested by a new threat.
This new threat was known as the void, and the Old Gods were its minions. Sargeras soon discovered that the void lords wished to corrupt the slumbering titan world-souls and turn them into creatures that would consume everything in the universe. In response, Sargeras cleaved the world in two and slaughtered the Nathrezim that inhabited it. He took this new information to the Pantheon, but he would not be met with the support he thought they would give.
Sargeras’ Quest to Save the Universe
The Pantheon would chastise Sargeras for cleaving the world in half and accuse him of acting irresponsibly. He would try to plead his case, but they would not listen to the dangers of the void. So, Sargeras would storm away and enter a deep isolation in the Great Dark Beyond as he tried to figure out what he could do. If the Pantheon were not willing to stop the encroaching horror of the void, then Sargeras would have to take it upon himself to save the universe.
Sargeras would be filled with fear and doubt, and he soon realized that the only way to save the universe was to purge it. He returned to the prison planet that he had built for the demons and tore it apart so that the demonic forces would be unleashed. He empowered these demons, gave them intelligence, and then gave them a choice to serve him or die. He would unleash his new Burning Legion on unsuspecting planets and lay waste to them so that the universe could remain safe.
Sargeras would gain the moniker of the fallen titan and cause destruction throughout the universe. His actions would lead to the destruction of many worlds and the death of those he once called allies. The Burning Legion would also go on to recruit even more races to assist in the destruction of all life. His army’s sights would eventually be set on the world-soul of Azeroth, and the life of the citizens of Azeroth would never be the same again.
The Burning Legion would go on to invade Azeroth many times, and would corrupt many mortals like Arthas Menethil to their cause. They would seemingly be defeated at the end of Legion, but no defeat lastw forever. The future of the Burning Legion is uncertain, but if Sargeras still lives then, the Burning Legion’s quest to purge the universe is still in motion.
