However, not every store updates as often as it should, and sometimes they lag behind so badly it becomes nearly laughable to fans. Such is the case with one particular Walmart that’s still promoting the Xbox 360 in-store.

Redditor ceramicsaturn took to the web to share a photo of a Walmart that defines its Xbox section as ‘Xbox 360’. The sign is so badly faded that it looks blue instead of the iconic Xbox green, and it looks rough around the edges, showing its age as one might expect from a sign advertising a console that launched over 15 years ago. Ceramicsaturn mused that Walmart didn’t seem to understand how the Xbox naming system works.

For what it’s worth, the section itself isn’t outdated, just the main signage. The area seems to be reserved for redeemable digital game cards and in-game currency for online titles like Fortnite. Modern releases like NBA 2K22 and Far Cry 6 are visible, and there’s an ad for Xbox Game Pass advertising games like Back 4 Blood, Halo, and Hades. All in all, Xbox owners could probably find what they’re looking for here, even if the signage dates back to a very long time ago.

Those in the comments were quick to show their amusement at the old sign, though many others agreed with ceramicsaturn that the Xbox titling system could generally lead to a lot of confusion among casual gamers or non-gamers. Instead of following a simple and logical succession like the PlayStation going from the original console and then 2-5, or Nintendo devices typically changing their names entirely with each release, the Xbox line of systems has changed naming conventions repeatedly.

Many believed the Xbox 720 would follow the 360, with the idea of a full circle of 360 degrees having been completed again. Instead, Microsoft named its next console the Xbox One, and adding further confusion, created the Xbox One S a few years later. Then came along the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Anyone unfamiliar with the naming conventions - like someone looking for a present - could find themselves very confused looking at the sign.

It may be that this Walmart didn’t receive the new signage it needed to update the display. Its neighboring sign is simply labeled ‘PlayStation’ rather than a specific console in the family, so there’s no telling how long it’s been there. In any case, it wouldn’t be the first gaming section to have an old relic. One player was shocked to discover a Mario Kart 64 box hidden away under a shelf at Toys R Us just a few years ago.
