On August 19, a picture of a memorial to 55-year-old maintenance worker Billy Eakes was shared on Reddit. It has since received thousands of upvotes and comments.
On March 1 this year, Eakes was killed while on duty. Police say Christopher Glenn Clark walked out of the store in Clarksville, Tennessee, with a drink and bag of chips without paying. Shortly after, Eakes was shot multiple times.
Eakes was transported to Tennova Healthcare, where he was later pronounced dead s a result of his injuries. Clark, 41, has since been charged with criminal homicide.
After visiting the Walmart store, Reddit user cloud9flyerr—real name Jake—shared a picture of the memorial at the store.
Jake told Newsweek: “I go to this Walmart at least once a week and have never really paid attention to the memorial, or rather maybe it was more recently put up. Either way, last week as I was leaving I drove right by it and it caught my eye hard.”
Pulling over, Jake got out of his vehicle to take a look at the retail giant’s tribute to Eakes. “I remember when this happened,” he said: “I remember Walmart had to shut down for some hours, and then everything went back to normal. I didn’t hear about it again.”
Just outside the store, the memorial, which includes a tree and several floral tributes, reads: “In loving memory of William T. Eakes Jr.”
“The memorial is beautiful,” said Jake. “If you’re looking at the building, it’s located right in front to the left.”
Moved by the tribute, Jake shared the picture on Reddit’s r/mildlyinteresting sub, where it has received attention from internet users intrigued by the story.
“I went and talked to a really nice lady [in the store],” said Jake: “I didn’t get her name, but she was so sweet and visibly became upset when talking about it. She said corporate actually aid for everything and all the employees had a ceremony at the store, all paid for.”
A spokesperson for Walmart told Newsweek: “In this case, Mr. Eakes was a beloved associate and we were honored to do this for him and his family, and to have a way to remember him.”
“Oh, this is heartbreaking,” said one commenter on the Reddit post. Another reply said: “That’s so cool that they did that.”
Many responses to the viral post were shocked that a corporation like Walmart had taken the initiative to support the Eakes family and his colleagues with a paid-for memorial. One commenter said: “You’re very brave to suggest it’s possible for Walmart to do something good. Reddit hates Walmart and is also incapable of admitting a person or organization can have both good and bad qualities.”
The thoughtful memorial left many Reddit users thinking differently about Walmart, particularly poster Jake: “Long story short, it is possible for a mega-corporation to show a little compassion to its employees, dead or alive. Personally, I’ll never drive by there again without thinking of Billy.
“That memorial tells me to not worry about the little things, and to try and spread love and positivity,” said Jake.
Newsweek has reached out to the Eakes family for comment.
